Abstract
This project encompasses applied and fundamental research in the field of sensors and sensors systems for road traffic monitoring, counting and control. The research will be conducted in the field of vehicle axle detectors, detectors of vehicle axle load and instrumentation for detection of road (driving) conditions. The proposed axle detectors will be based on fiber optic interferometers where the sensing fiber will be embedded in the upper layer of the road surface. Investigating will be conducted in all segments of the systems, including system for embedding the fiber in the road structure, optical design and signal processing. In addition research will be conducted in the area of different optical sensors for the monitoring of the driving conditions that are key part of modern highway infrastructure.
