Abstract
Recent worsening of international security first in USA and later elsewhere gave caused sharp increase in interest in systematic and fast capturing of images of identification documents - above all passports with high resolution as well as theri processing in information systems for processing of guests, visitors, travellers in business (such as hotels) as well as administrative systems and locations such as border control. Known typical application solutions on the world market based on analog PAL video sensing with D/A conversion in imaging device and another (A/D) conversion in the host computer typically provide for the 640x480 pixel solution which is not enough to satisfy current application demands.due to poor image qualitty. High-resolution scanners cand porvide for quality at low costt - but are too slow for the described applications, whereas special high-quality image readers are still far too expensive for the described masss applications. In this project, we therefore propose to develop a special-purpose intelligent periferal unit for fast, high-high quality capturing of images of identification documents. Our design goals are to achieve minimum resolution of 1024x1024 pixels, high linearity dynamic range at hogh speed not more than two seconds per image, with local image pre-processing for light correction and restoration of image geometry, with local automatic recognition of standardized textual labels in documents , as well as with fast strandard communication link (preferably FireWire) to the host computer. The proposed peripheral device will be robust yet ergonomucally efficient and will be of esthetically pleasing design. The resulting design must provide for the manufacturing cost below 500 euro per unit in 1K quantities. The proposers believe these goals ara realistic with recent advances in image sensing and processing technologies. Like with the analog predecessor of the proposed device, the commercial sponsoring partner on the project (MAiS, Ljubljana, Slovenia) plans for world-wide martketing of the new device both within its new Fidelity hotel management information system as well as a separate OEM unit.
