Abstract
The project is an evaluation of a new "sector" eco-industries and first of all the assessment of it's prospects in Slovenia. The analysis is based on the OECD/Eurostat definition of the eco-industries, which defines eco-industries as: "activities which produce goods and services to measure, prevent, limit, minimise or restore environmental damage to water, air and soil, as well as problems related to waste, noise and eco-systems. These includes cleaner technologies, products and services which reduce environmental risk and minimise use of resources". Goods and services belong to one of the following areas: wastewater treatment, air pollution control, waste management, process optimisation, etc. The study will provide a picture of the Slovenian eco-business. The main research objectives are: (i) to classify the environmental goods and services of Slovenian producers into ECOTEC list, (ii) to find out their weight in the individual environmental sub-sectors, (iii) to identify the size and the characteristics of Slovenian market, (iv) to find out the market structure, (v) to forecast the future growth rate of the market, (vi) to assess the future employment possibilities of the sector, (vii) to foresee the formation and relations between the Slovenian and European enterprises. The main research hypotheses are: (1) The eco-industries represent a highly perspective sector in Slovenia, from the point of view of GDP generation and employment. (2) The growth rates for eco-industries are also predicted highly. (3) Because of the geographic proximity and the harmonisation with EU environmental practices and regulations in Slovenia, there will be an important role of the EU suppliers in the development of Slovenian eco-business. The results of the project will contribute to the development of industrial ecology from the point of view of identification of products and services, enabling the realisation of its key principles. Regarding that the results refer to the linkages between environmental problems and economic solutions, the project contributes to the development of environmental economics. The results will show the importance of the eco-industries to the achievement of the sustainable development objectives and the Slovenian progress in the accession process to the EU. The project will give a transparent and useful picture of the sector for utilising the results in decision-making at business level (assessment of competitiveness, market and partners). The key users are also: Slovenian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (informing and directing enterprises) and Ecological Development Fund (favourable crediting of perspective industries).
