Abstract
Starting point for our research is hundredth anniversary of widest gathering of Slovene folk songs, under the guidance of the Comittee for gathering Slovene folk songs with melodies (OSNP). The activity of which this gathering was part, took place in all nations of Austrian monarchy. The intention at that time was to prepare the "publication of the whole popular poetry and popular music of peoples of Austria" in a collection, including every region. Downfall of the Austro-Hungary also caused the end of the activity and anticipated collection of folk songs off all Austro-Hungary nations was never published. With the initiative of the OEsterreichisches Volksliedwerk in Vienna and hundredth anniversary of this activity, the research project is foreseen, based on cooperation of the institutes of all former Austro-Hungarian nations. The aim of this project is to explore the history and the invaluable collections of the emperial and royal popular folk song enterprise in the countries concerned and to re-establish a common music documentation of central and Eastern Europe. In the course of the project conferences will take place, during which the researchers of the different countries will report on the results of their research work and will have the opportunity to exchange experience and information. The hundredth anniversary will be celebrated in Vienna in 2004, with exhibition that will allow a large public to have access to the research theme of the project; then, the exhibition will be shown also in the other countries that have participated. The role of our institute is participation on many levels. The starting point will be radical examination of gathering and research work of the time, faciliated by joint research of staff at the institute and projected from different standpoints. The results will be presented for hundredth anniversary in 2004, both in Vienna and Ljubljana. The emphasis of the research is examination of work at that time, from textual, musicological and ethnological standpoints, including archive itself. Through the course of research, all to date discoveries and publications will be included. The aim of the project is to reappraie existing material and the research history of the time, and publish the collections and research results. Due to a extraordinary cultural, historical and national value of material gathered at the time, we also started the project of building digital archive of all the collections gathered by the Comittee for gathering Slovene folk songs with melodies. The aim of the project is 1) preservation of both - original material and digital resources, 2) to enable better access for users and 3) possibility to integrate in other international digital archives and projects. The preparations for anniversary include cooperation with all institutes involved, mutual exploration of collections and formation of research methods on international level.
