Abstract
Recently much interest has been shown in novel ceramic-matrix composites with corrugated or cellular structure produced by repeated plastic deformation of layered bi-material tapes before sintering. This post-doc research proposal aims to expand nowadays fundamental knowledge of the processing and properties of these novel composites. A paraffin-oil-based process will be used to produce alumina/tetragonal zirconia laminates, which will be subsequently plastically deformed by repeated rolling and folding. The microstructure evolution will be studied and key-processing variables will be determined. The resultant properties of sintered composites will be compared to those obtained with conventionally produced structures. In addition to this model system, other ceramic-matrix composites will be investigated, whereby emphasis will be given to bi-materials with bio-medical applications.
