Abstract
The further research programme "Control of Electromechanical Systems" consist of two parts. The first part deals with the modelling, analysis and control design of electromagnetic devices or systems (induction machine, synchronous machine, reluctance machine, linear and rotating machines, servo drives and active magnetic bearings), while the second part discusses the modelling, analysis and control of power systems (local control and protection of power systems). Both parts are combined into one unit by applied dynamical treatment, which represents the basis for control design in the broadest sense. In framework of the first part, the research team will study various approaches to the dynamic modelling of electromagnetic devices and complex technical systems (analytical models). The dynamic models will be used in the analysis of operating properties and in the design of advanced non-linear control systems. Extensive modern numerical procedures, so far only used by developers and designers of electromechanical devices, will be used to the greatest possible degree in order to determine the parameters of these models. In framework of the second part, the research team will deal with the dynamic modelling and analysis of power system elements and the power system as a whole. Again, the dynamic approach will be used. The dynamic model of the discussed system enables high quality analysis of different operation states. The research work will be based on the use of theoretical findings in the development of new methods for the local control (non-linear methods) and protection of power system elements, aimed at improved availability and quality of the supplied electrical energy. The research will focus on following fields: 1) the analysis of transients and faults (analytical methods), 2) the development of tools for computer aided parametrization, coordination and testing of protection devices, 3) the development of adaptive stabilizers, 4) the design and development of new power system elements, and 5) the development of alternative sources of electrical energy.
Significance for science
This research group solves real problems which make every day obstacles for companies in the electric and metallic industry as well as for the EPS management. In order to solve problems which appear in the development of new products and problems with the EPS control on the limit of the system’s capability, often only scientific and research methods can be used. This type of work is managed only by those qualified researchers which own both, a solid theoretical knowledge, as well practical experiences. However, in the field covered by our planned research group there are only a few qualified researchers, but unfortunately they do not reach critical amount of the required knowledge if they are not joint together. The established international cooperation is, therefore, even more important. Researches from many European countries, with which we have contacted, share the same opinion, consequently this lead to the mutual cooperation and exchange of scientific ideas, which is very important for development of science. In some other countries in the world, particularly in Europe, topics related to electrical engineering are not on the very top list in the development priorities, therefore some European countries has already started to import qualified researchers from the east. Coworkers from our research group has established a solid cooperation with researchers from other Slovenian research institutions, as well as with researchers from Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Austria, Germany, Belgium, France, Finland, Greece and USA. The quality level of this cooperation is confirmed by common publications, which is growing in the course of time. The number of publications in the top quality reviews and magazines is also growing, whence certainly follows that the proposed results are interested also for the broad international public. All publications in the quality foreign reviews are based on original and innovative solutions and are thus important for international community; otherwise they would not be accepted for publication. Furthermore, the increased response to publications, which can be measured by the number of citations, also shows originality, innovations and advancement of proposed solutions which is one of the very important goals of this research programme. Members of our research group are permanent coworkers in a number of respected research groups world wide, where they actively work as invited researchers and professors. Most of the members of the research group have spent a long time as researchers in many other countries, which can be seen from the available bibliography. There were different joint projects, while the outcome was always mutual. The biggest benefit certainly goes to the individual, because the cooperation within the international research group enables for the researcher to grow based on the new knowledge and proficiency. While the benefit for the international professional community is not straightforward, the domestic companies get it directly by sharing their researchers with our program group, establishing connections with foreign researchers, and using their valuable scientific experiences and often also a high expensive research infrastructure.
Significance for the country
Domestic electric and metallic industry is important for the social and economic development of Slovenia mostly because of their export orientation. Existences of many companies, which are our partners, depend on innovative and quality solutions within the development of new devices and systems. The tendency of successful companies is to manage their own development, whereas competent researchers (domestic and foreign) are included, as well as the infrastructure potentially used by those researchers. This is the pattern for the overall and efficient development of new programmes, where the researchers from companies cooperate with qualified researchers, which are financed in part by international research programme, whereas also competent researches are included. Similar pattern was already successfully applied to the EPS management. Furthermore, EPS represents an indispensable infrastructure for many other social and working activities, whereas its safe and undisturbed operation is the first condition for the economic and social development. In regard to the quality of EPS operation all ways for energy generation are important, that is classical and alternative ones. The proposed research programme is connected with Slovenian aims in different areas, such as the development of university educational system and research activities, introduction of new high technological products, rational electric power generation and consumption (protection od nature), as well as the area of science. Successfulness of this approach was confirmed in the case of development of the advanced control for a resistance spot welding system (international patent application), the development of a non-linear control system for different types of AC machines (two patent applications) and the development of new primary and secondary devices for the EPS. Already finished studies in the filed of electrical power engineering have been a groundwork for gaining the state location plan for building a new power line. Coworkers in this research group have founded a company ICEM with a unique testing laboratory in Slovenia, which employs five experts. Furthermore, they have developed a series of new products (e.g. high voltage generator, which is produced by METREL). The research group is planning to keep this way of work. Effective technological development in the field of individual branches in electric and metal industry needs investments into both, the human potential and the equipment. The researchers and equipment, which are the first condition for the development in numerous Slovenian companies, are ensured through the cooperation with our research group. Furthermore, through the cooperation with the researches from previously mentioned European countries and the USA, a specific technological knowledge, which is not held by us, comes to Slovenia. During the exchange abroad our researchers are using expensive equipment. The benefit is mutual, which is confirmed through the interest of all participants. Realization of high technological goals is a first condition for increasing the production and for the opening of new jobs in the domestic electric industry. In this way, solid economic conditions are built for the consolidation of the national identity and conservation of the cultural heritage.
