Abstract
In the scope of the research program the following research activities are conducted:
Retrieval, processing, characterization, analysis and modeling of real and synthetic telecommunication traffic.
Switching and routing optimization of for next generation networks.
Analysis and study of different network parameters impact on quality of services (QoS)
Analysis of theoretical bounds of modulation methods and optimization of antennae of wireless local area networks.
Optimization of optical fibers measuring methods and development of extremely fast electronics.
Development of analog circuit optimization computer software for massive parallel computing.
Application of algorithms developed for signal processing in communications to other areas of research (digital filtering in MRI, formation of an acoustic space image, ...)
Development of new services in cooperation with service providers.
Significance for science
New approaches in high-level digital system design, new fault models and testing algorithms of digital circuits were developed. This allows implementation of SW tools for designing digital circuits and systems at higher level of abstraction. The results in the field of telecommunication protocols will impact the development, implementation and use of modern communication protocols. Research in the field of user-computer interaction reaches towards non-invasive identification of user responses, user profile modeling, content profile modeling, use of machine learning, data mining, image processing, and low level feature extraction. Good user modeling and its application in several applications (from recommender systems of multimedia content to stress detection in sensitive environments) is crucial for efficient use of existing and for development of new computer applications. The most important results in the area of telecommunication networks and services in great measure reflect also inreal test implementations, which, aside the realization proof, serve as a basic implementation of test infrastructure enabling testing, evaluation and further research and development activities. Important results in the area of telecommunication hardware are mostly from the field of optical and high frequency radio transmission. Firs results of the research and development of Interlingua are promising and give good insight into structure of natural languages important for development of interlingua e-spernto, which will eventualy help to overcome various language barriers on the Internet and enable access to the information in the natural language of the user.
Significance for the country
The knowledge obtained through research activities in the scope of the research program was successfully transferred to Slovenian telecommunication industry and service providers. We organized workshops, seminars and summer schools for R&D engineers from Slovenian electronics industry. This will influence on broadening products/services on the market, stronger competitive position on the market and initiation of new technologies. Beside this, the knowledge was transferred through several R&D projects for Slovenian companies. The progress of Slovenian economy should be based on modern technologies with innovative solutions and high added value. The development of modern teleinformation services is a step towards these goals. We see our research group as a generator of innovations in the field of multimedia services, thus making a contact of Slovenian technological community with most recent international advances in this field. As renowned researchers we promote the Slovenian know-how in the European research and technology space.
