Significance for science
Control of electrical machines and development of modulation methods for special applications represent a universal scientific/research challenge, with a final goal of reducing the consumption (losses) of the converter supplied systems. Accordingly, the need for better system modeling, methods for adaptive control aimed to tracking the model's parameter modification during operation and reduction of elements, present in current solutions (e.g. reduction of number of sensors), is to appear. These challenges require new knowledge on the theoretical, as well as on application level.
Significance for the country
Renewable energy sources, efficient use of energy and its storage are of growing importance. Wider expansion of these technologies will be enabled by highly-efficient solid-state power converters. Facing the high prices of energy, alternative power sources will become competitive enough, supported by corresponding technologies (hydrogen, fuel cells) and efficient power converters. Slovenia is notorious for a highly developed industry in the area of electrical servo drives. In that sense, the group will continue to cooperate with renowned Slovenian companies where our solutions are expected to find the way towards concrete products. Novel ecologically acceptable soft-magnetic composite materials will be introduced in a field of electric machines productions. Optimization methods and composite materials make possible to achieve smaller amount of used energy in production of electric machines and to increase the quality and competitivness of Slovenian industry of electric machines. Our cooperation with Slovenian industry shows the need of newly designed electric machines. High speed electric machines made from soft-magnetic composite materials belong to this category and they allow the industry to advance in higher quality class with higher added value. Synchronous generators are the biggest machines if classified according to the output power and as we may say all the electric power is produced by them. Working reliability assurance of existent synchronous generator is of a strategic importance for reliable electric energy supply, since there is no reserve capacity for electric energy production. Reliable electric energy supply with our own capacities is a fundamental term for permanent development of Slovenia. Efficient mastering of the wire bending process leads to a higher added value and increases the competitive position of company Niko in the global market. Furthermore the company will launch new high-tech wire bending machine on the market. All has a positive effect on the Slovenian economical development. From the ecological point of view the railway transport is favorable, but there is a lot to be done in Slovenian railway system. More detailed knowledge of the system and efficient overvoltage protection is an important part of entirety.
