Abstract
High-energy ions experience different reactions while passing through matter, mostly scaterring, loss of nucleons and fragmentation into smaller nuclei. To understand these phenomena we need to measure cross sections for reactions. We will irradiate different materials with ions from high-energy accelerators. The choice of ions and materials is determined by the applicability of the expected results for verification of theories on ion fragmentation and cosmic ray propagation as well as with the practical needs in heavy ion therapy of tumors and in spacecraft space shielding. Reaction cross sections will be measured with etched track detectors using the analysis methods, developed at the J. Stefan Institute. In collaboration with the Chalmers University we will setup database with cross-sections for ion fragmentation.
