Abstract
The proposed project intends to assess the impact of urban environment on the quality and quantity of ground water resources, which are almost the sole source of drinking water in Slovenia. Aquifers from which drinking water is extracted present the natural geological environment with its numerous interrelated and often interacting processes. Each of these processes has its own impact on the quality and quantity of a water resource, demanding a comprehensive approach to the evaluation and solving of these problems. The proposed project is divided into two closely linked thematic units. The first unit will be devoted to the analysis of processes influencing the transport of pollutants through the ground into the unsaturated aquifer zone towards the saturated zone. In the unsaturated zone, the vertical component of pollutant transport prevails, and the majority of physical and chemical processes in this zone take place in the area of contact between mineral grains and water. These processes will be dealt with by measuring the chemical and physical processes in a field laboratory comprising the entire ground profile down to the groundwater table. Regional hydrogeological conditions will be treated on the Sorško polje north of Ljubljana that is important potential aquifer for drinking water supply of Ljubljana and its wider soroundings. As a drinking water resource Sorško polje is not explored well and consequently the protection of the aquifer is not already defined. The intention of the proposed project is to investigate Sorško polje in the framework of Ljubljana water supply.
