Abstract
The use of paper sludge as the hydraulic barrier material in landfills is a new technology that has gained some attention since the early 1990 and represent an innovative way to recycle paper mill residuals. The geotechnical properties of paper sludge are similar those for compacted clays. In general, paper sludges have high water contetnts, high organic content, high compressibilities and low shear strengths. The use of paper sludge as the hydraulic barrier material requires special attention to its unique geotechnical behavior. This aplication is in last 10 years being assessed in several countries within the European Community (Finland, Sveden, etc.), Canada, USA and South Africa.
