Abstract
Major part of Slovenian beech forests are classified as well preserved forest ecosystems and are represented with 31,7% of total living stock. Those forests cover more than 87 % of total forest area, which is more than 800.000 hectares. According to climatic changes (potential temperature rise and precipitation re-arrangement) also carbon stock in biomass would increase. For the perspective and future development of young beech forests the expert knowledge of dynamics and proportion of carbon sequestration in biomass (above ground - below ground) is of great importance. With comparable study of carbon cycling where beech is introduced with underplanting (spruce monocultures, natural beech forests and virgin forest) ecological constraints which contribute to optimal success of young seedlings would be defined on different research objects. Model approach would include definition of sites and climatic conditions (1), ecophysiological parameters (light, photosynthesis, water dynamics)(2), roots and mycorrhizae studies (3), genetics (4) and timber quality(5).
