Abstract
Scholars of family studies in Western societies had noticed a trend of the so-called "new fatherhood" in the last few decades. This trend means more active involvement of fathers in family life, such as division of labour within families, sharing of responsibilities for children, caring work etc. The trend of the new fatherhood is not - if compared to Western countries - as much pronounced as in Slovenia, which we take as our basic hypothesis. Normative and legislative regulations within family policy regarding fatherhood could represent a strong incentive for more active realisation of fatherhood, measures for equal opportunities, balancing family and work etc. The aim of the research project is to identify the main obstacles, which prevent the development of potentials of fatherhood. We will try to formulate proposals for improving family policy activities and measures. The project is composed of empirical research work and policy analyses, the final result being the collection of data regarding the phenomenon of ''new fatherhood'' in Slovenia. At the same time the result will enable us to compare the finding with the similar trends in other European countries. Some proposals for legislation changes in the field of family policy are expected as well. Empirical part of the project will consist of the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods (survey method on a random sample of fathers; in-depth interviews, focus groups). The topics covered by these methods will include: demographic data, division of labour within the family, social networks, family/work relations, fathering practices. The survey will be carried out on the sample of fathers who experienced the so-called "paternal leave". Policy analysis will include the existing family policy documents and the evaluation of the on going activities as far as fatherhood is concerned.
