Abstract
Social network theory is a sociological theory that explains activities of actors (people, groups, or firms) and results of their actions on the basis of relationships between the actors, which form a social network. In entrepreneurship, particularly when owner-managers who start their own firms are concerned, three types of relational structures are of special importance: network for acquisition of resources for formation, start-up and activity of a firm, network for acquisition of information and advice that are important for the firm development, and friendship network. In the proposed study we mainly focus on the relationship between the entrepreneur''s personal network and business performance of his or her enterprise in terms of growth and profitability. The base research thesis states that the structure of relationships that forms the entrepreneur''s network influences growth and profitability of the firm. A series of hypotheses will be developed on the basis of the base thesis. Research findings will provide new knowledge about functioning of entrepreneurial networks and about impacts of entrepreneurial networks on business results, relevant both for science/research and practice. The key scientific newness is the development of new knowledge about the entrepreneur''s network on the basis of sub-networks. Useful information will be provided about each sub-network as well as about their combinations. On the basis of the research findings we will be able to make a prediction about which entrepreneurs have a higher possibility of success based on the structure of their networks, as well as to give useful advice to entrepreneurs in formation of their business and social networks. Since this study analyzes the imapact on growth and profitability of firms, the reasearch will provide also findings that are important at the level of Slovenian national economy.
