Abstract
The purpose of the research is to examine the history of the ancient Illyricum during the 80 years of reign of the dynasty of Theodosius (379-455). This period presents the begining and the first decades of the foreign invasions, which were fulfilled by the settlement of Slaves in the 6th and 7th century. It means an introduction of events which changed the way of living at that territory almost completely. In the geographical point of view there will be the territory of todays Balkan region together with the Slovene and the Austiran territory on the north exemened through the projected research. The main purpose of the research is to present the Greek and Latine ancient and mediaeval written sources about Illyricum in that time systematically (these are: Socrates Scholastikos, Sozomenos, Philostorgios, Zosimos, Priskos, Olympiodoros, Euagrios, Malalas, Marcellinus Comes, Prosper Tiro, Johannes Antiochenus). The sources, which will be given in Latine and Greek as well, will be translated in Slovene and thoroughly commented. The commentary based upon the analysis of the written sources will try to find out the historicl value of theme and will also try to give as profound picture of the exemined past as possible. The stress will be put on:
(1) the Gothic and Hunnic invasions and their settlement in Illyricum;
(2) the concequences of these invasions upon the way of living there;
(3) the functioning of the Roman administration and (4) the role and organisation of the church at that time.
