Abstract
The project will use underwater research methods to investigate issues regarding river Ljubljanica with its tributaries as an archaeological site with numerous finds dating from the Neolithic to the medieval period. As Ljubljanica is ranked among the most interesting rivers in Europe, the primary focus of the project will be evaluation of the archaeological potential and research of known underwater sites and discovery of new ones. The project"s goals include evaluation of the archaeological potential of the Ljubljanica riverbed, research of known underwater sites and discovery of new ones, analysis of the influence of postdepositional processes on the distribution of finds and the comparation of gathered data with the results of sedimentological analysis of the channel and riverbanks, georadar surveying and aerophotographical analysis. Underwater work will consist of reconnaissance and surveying of narrowly delimited areas or (visual surveying of the sediment and its manual removal until reaching firm ground; metal detector surveying and the potential sounding of the riverbed sediment). At the interpretational level we will attempt to explain the significance of the finds, since possible causes for occurrence of valuable objects in the water range from accidental losses to the ritual or otherwise intentional deposition.
