Abstract
The theme of the proposed project focuses on ethnological research in Slovenia in comparison to the situation in other parts of Europe in the period from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 21st centuries. This period of one century corresponds to the scientific phase in the development of ethnology and ethnological research in Slovenia. Comprehensive surveys of ethnological themes and topics written in the past include Narodopisje Slovencev/Ethnography of Slovenes, 1944 and 1952; V. Novak, Slovenska ljudska kulture/Slovene Folk Culture, 1960; Pogledi na etnologijo/Views on Ethnology, 1978; and Slovensko ljudsko izročilo/Slovene Folk Heritage, 1980). Considering above all the themes that were and still are in the focus of attention at the Institute of Slovenian Ethnology, recent research findings, available empirical material (different collections), and changing research patterns, it is our wish to depict on one hand the research of culture and the way of life in Slovenia from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 21st centuries. This will be based on select examples from material, social and symbolic cultures that will be presented clearly and illustrated with case studies. On the other hand we wish to discover theoretical and methodological aspects and different perspectives of those researchers who had a pronounced impact upon ethnological production of the period in question. They will be classified into three interrelated sections: -Views of researchers - on temporal and spatial aspects of identity, tradition, innovations, intercultural and interethnic relations. Select cultural phenomena and processes of material, social and symbolic cultures, with the consideration of different time periods and transitions (pre-socialist era, the period of socialism, the period of transition), social millieus and regions. -Views of those who are being researched - their memories, creativity, authenticity, appurtenance. Their views and cultural horizon present the building blocks of ethnological and folkloristical findings and bring to them a wholly different quality. -Views on researchers - their research methods (topography of notes, analyses, interpretations, presentations). Researchers' points of view, opinions and methods indicate theoretical and methodological shifts, their relation to their research object or theme, and justify the relation between objects and subjects in a research process. The work of researchers at the Institute of Slovenian Ethnology at the Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts is based on the study of domestic and foreign publications, rich archival collections of the Institute, audiovisual material, photographs and field researh work. Employed will be empirical and interpretational methods according to selected themes.
