Abstract
Narration as a procedure fundamental to the production of pragmatic and literary texts in written and spoken modes has not been sufficiently investigated in the context of Slovene linguistic research. The understanding of this textual category acquired through theoretical and empirical observation as proposed in our research project will have immediate applied relevance. Hypotheses: In spite of some general similarities, narrative features of texts vary considerably among languages and cultures. Grammatical, semantic, rhetorical and stylistic differences occur on all linguistic levels, from prosodic, morphosyntactic to textual. A contrastive approach will enable the understanding of narrative mechanisms governing the comprehension and production of texts in foreign languages as well as in the mother tongue. On this basis, we will explain various difficulties and errors in the acquisition and use of foreign languages and Slovene. Aims: The research project will attempt to describe narration mechanisms in selected Slovene, French, Italian, Spanish and English texts and consequently contribute to the improvement of: - foreign-language teaching, - translator and interpreter training, - acquisition of Slovene as first, second or foreign language, - text comprehension and production, including functional literacy, - discourse-rhetoric skills, - translation and interpreting.
