Abstract
The aim of the project is the establishment of a data basis and the development of new research methodologies in archaeology, which will enable the assesment of complexity of the settlement continuity on the prehistoric hillforts in the area between the Slovenaian coast and the Postojna "doors". The project is constituted from two parts. In the first one the archaeological finds, discovered in the last century but unfortunately never published, will be analysed with the modern analithical techniques. On the bases of these results, hypotheses will be formed. These hypotheses will serve as the bases for the field work - for the archaeological excavations on a limited scale on four fortified prehistoric hillforts (Gradišče near Unec, Grad near Šmihel, Grašišče above Sočerga and Kaštelir above Korte). Despite a century long tradition of research in this area and a rather good knowledge on this topic in other areas of Slovenia, this will be the first modern, research oriented archaeological excavations on a prehistoric site in southwestern Slovenia. In the second part of the project a new methodology of field research, based on the results of the excavations, will be formulated. It will form the basis for the future systemathic research in this area. At the same time the results of the excavations will enable to check the hypotheses based on the evaluation of the old collections and the formulation of conclusions about the temporal scale and the social dynamics of the prehistoric communities in the area which acts as the transitional area between the continental part of Slovenia and the Mediterranean basin. The results of the project in the area between the Slovenian coast and the Postojna "doors" will be on one hand new and empirically supported conclusions about the functioning of prehistoric societies, and the development of methodologically modern research methods for the future research on the other hand.
