Abstract
The presence of synonyms and homonyms makes the identification of fig varieties difficult and calls for the development of a uniform and standardized identification system. Before the development of DNA marker systems classical morphological markers were used. However, due to the geographic diffusion and consequences of environmental effects, the results that they yield are not comparable. Among the available DNA markers, microsatellites are the most promising, a conclusion which led us to the development of a method of isolating novel fig microsatellites by the enrichment procedure, the characterization of microsatellite loci, and the study of their information content. Based on genotyping of varieties a reliable identification system will be set up and reference varieties will be selected.
