Abstract
We intend to evaluate the epidemiology of herpes simplex type1 and type 2 in Slovene population. Therefore two groups were formed; in the first (the STD group) are patients treated at the outpatient clinics for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Ljubljana and Maribor. The second group (the control group) is formed from persons whose eventual disease is in no way connected with sexually transmitted infections and who have a negative history of sexually tramsmitted deseases. The control group is adjusted to the STD group regarding the age and sex of the attendees. 221 sera were tested and 200 results were statistically analysed - 100 from each group. Blood samples were collected and tested at the Institute for Microbiology and Immunology of Medical Faculty (MF) Ljubljana. For detection of IgG antibodies against HSV type 1 the Behring Enzygnost anti HSV (IgG) reagents and for detection of antibodies against HSV type 2 Virotech ELISA Testkit Herpes simplex 2 (for IgG detection) were used. The following results were obtained: the prevalence of IgG antibodies against HSV type 1 was 91 % in the STD group and 82 % in the control group. The prevalence of IgG antibodies against HSV type 2 was 69 % in the STD group and 57 % in the control group. High titers of antibodies to HSV type 2 in both groups and especially the absence of statistically significant difference between them induced us to reexamine a number of sera with the ELISA type specific test for HSV type 2 from the Gull Laboratories. At the reexamination essentially lower percentage of anti HSV type 2 positive sera were obtained: in the STD group roughly 17 % and in the control group only a few percents.
