Abstract
The aim of the proposed project is to modernize the archaeological informational infrastructure with the purpose of a more effective heritage managing and the establishment of a firm basis for research and education. We intend to develop an information system through the integration of records, inventories and bibliography, referring to archaeological heritage, and spatially orientated databases. It will be based on the internet and the internet GIS to facilitate the exchange and use of data amongst local, regional, national and international partnerships. It could be an effective support in decision-making concerning protection and safeguard of the archaeological sites, as well the reasonable planning of investigation and promotion of archaeology according to needs of the contemporary society of new communications and information technologies.
Significance for science
The project represents implementation of new informational approaches and knowledge in internet GIS technologies in Slovene archaeological research. It contributes to standardization for documenting archaeological heritage and provides an effective support for a reasonable compiling and exchange of data and information on archaeological heritage. This way it could be upgraded and evaluated by expert analyses and interpretations. Integration of an archaeological geo-referenced layer with other spatially orientated bases and cartographic backgrounds allows creating an interactive archaeological map which is a good basis for advanced spatial archaeological and cultural landscape studies.
Significance for the country
In regards to the complex structure and nature of the information system, it considers many aspects of the archaeological heritage, such as physical space, typology, chronology and other references. It could comply with diverse needs and purposes in the field of education, cultural heritage management and promotion on a local, regional and national scale. It can have a positive influence on prevention, protection strategies and evaluation of the archaeological heritage as well as ensuring an up-to-date overview of the state-of-research. It can contribute to a general improvement of cultural management and support professional decision-making.
