Abstract
The research project addresses the problems in the field of technology-enhanced learning. Its main goal is to define building blocks necessary for creation of advanced educational networks that are based on heterogeneous systems and technologies, personalized learning services, and security and privacy provision. The project is contributing to strengthening the investment in human capital by providing access to learning resources and services more cost effectively, efficiently and conveniently to individuals and companies. The goal will be achieved by • facilitating interoperability of heterogeneous learning systems and their integration into advanced educational networks, • provision of secure, seamless and personalized access to the network resources that suit best the learners’ needs, and • developing a framework for data protection and privacy provision.
Significance for science
The project contributed to research and development in technology enhanced learning. It defined basic elements for interoperable heterogeneous educational systems and open exchange of learning content. Those results are the basis for creation of advanced educational technologies and applications, quick efficient search for content, based on learner’s preferences, and learner’s privacy provision. Developed decision model supports evaluation and selection of the most appropriate learning management system for specific environment and target group. The project also made a contribution to the development of personal learning environments and educational models that are more learner-centric and are based on learner’s active involvement in an educational process. Contrary to monolithic learning management systems the learners are able to use social software, such as blog, wiki, social bookmarking tools, etc., to assemble their personal learning environments that best suit their needs. New models support competence development in self-directing intentional learning projects, multicultural collaborating and social networking that are essential for creativity and innovations. Developed models and technologies were evaluated in higher education and companies. Key issues in electronic business conducted over unprotected networks are provided security and privacy. In this area the project contributed an analysis of security and privacy requirements in technology enhanced learning and suitability of various security mechanisms and privacy-enhancing technology for advanced educational services.
Significance for the country
Fast economic development, new information and communications technologies, increased importance of knowledge and work in global and complex environment are challenges that require from individuals and organisations speed, flexibility, innovations and constant acquisition of knowledge, skills and competences. Traditional forms of education and training are not sufficient anymore in such complex and dynamic environment. This project has contributed to strengthening the role and importance of technology enhanced learning by enabling easier, more efficient, personalized and safer access to a variety of educational services, tools and content, best suited to learner’s preferences. The project contributed to strengthening the investment in human capital by providing access to learning resources and services more cost effectively, efficiently and conveniently to individuals and companies. The project enabled Slovenian institutions and individuals to more efficiently obtain knowledge, skills and competences in new circumstances. On the other hand Slovenian educational service and content providers can easier offer their services and content to the larger market and integrate their systems into global educational networks. The results also contributed to implementation of national and EU directives, especially in the following areas: • increase access to education and training by means of new technologies; • develop an innovative environment for technology enhanced education to enable use of information and communication technologies. Among the international initiatives we can mention »eEurope+« and »eEurope Resolution«, where e-education has an important role, and »i2010 – A European Information Society for growth and employment«, that promoted the positive contribution that information and communication technologies can make to the economy, society and personal quality of life. The project results are useful both for higher education and life-long learning. The results have also facilitated our further collaboration with European research institutions in the field and contributed to acceptance of a few new research projects from the eContentplus and Leonardo da Vinci programmes.
