Abstract
The project will deal with etiologic factors involved in the development of premature ovarian failure (POF). Excluding genetic causes, the respective presence of the latent Addison’s disease, antithyroid antibodies and autoimmune oophoritis will be determined. The diagnosis of the autoimmune disease permits the immunosuppressive treatment, and consequently the restoration of reproductive function. Determination of metabolic and cardiovascular changes in women with POF will lead to identification of the group of women at high risk for the development of cardiovascular disease, and to introduction of preventive and/or therapeutic measures.
Significance for science
The results of this research project present the trigger for further investigation and study of premature ovarian failure stressing the need for identification of an accurate and simple method for determination of ovarian reserve.
Significance for the country
At the national level, the results of this research project provide the evidence that requires an improvement in the management of premature ovarian failure, the health problem which has so far been underestimated in Slovenia.
