Abstract
The objective of this research project is to carry out an in-depth comparative study of the terms of an anthropological “polemos”, in the broadest sense, which determines the forms, expressions, norms, rules and protocols of the legitimisation of the communal in contemporary European society. In this research project centred on the dialectics of exclusion and translation, special attention will be paid to the struggle between the “European” universalist model that is today fractured, and a “multiculturalist” model of the constitution of communities.
The starting point of the project that aims to understand the new world order which seeks in vein an equilibrium and transparent rules for action and to identify new political and scientific goals, a range of central categories of western thought and politics – universal, particular, common, exception, identity, community, the Other, subjectivity, etc. must be subjected to critical examination.
The research is centred on two distinct, yet complementary, issues. The first involves an analysis of the relationship between exclusion and translation in order to render intelligible the conditions under which the neutralisation and reactivation of the principle of translation has taken place over the course of the history of Europe, on the one hand; and the occultation of exclusion in the form of an internal exclusion which goes hand in hand with the “invisibilisation” of frontiers in the era of globalisation, on the other. The second involves an inquiry into politics as the stake of translation in order to clarify the dialectics of exclusion and translation that have an influence on the perception and representation of Europe as an open plurality and to examine the “politics of translation” situated at the centre of an anti-segregationist Europe.
Significance for science
The present research project investigates the ways in which philosophy, linguistics, psychoanalysis and anthropology, develop new methodological approaches and conceptual instruments appropriate for an analysis of contemporary practices of translation and its transfromation in science, culture, politics, communication, etc.
In this inovative attempt at reconsidering translative practices in their complexity, translation is considered as a cultural, politico-social andnot only as a linguistic phenomenon.
A trans-disciplinary approach provides a more precise formulatin of and identification of the issue of translation in concemporary societies. Crossing the methodological and disciplinary divide, the present research project provides a more sophisticated and comprehensive elaboration of the problem of translation and of new, inovative translative practices in contemporary political, cultural, scientific... space. Based on contemporary philosophical, psychoanalytic and linguistic approaches to new practices of translation and confrontation with the limit of untranslatability in various domains of contemporary life: communication, policy, dialog between heterogenous language comunities, cultures, etc., the research project aims at the elaboration of appropriate concepts, theoretical models and research practices for grasping the complex issue of translation. The theoretical and practical aspects of this project are closely related as it aims at developing a trehory of translation that will contribute to the promotion of democratic practices with a vew to a plurilingual and multiculatural Europe.
Significance for the country
In the context of increased integratino within the EU it is necessary that Slovenia not only preserve its natural and cultural heritage but also actively participates, on the basis of equality of all member states, in creating a common European cultural heritage. An inquiry into the European multicultiralism and multilingualism, leads to the conclusion that Europe, in order to be able to preserve its diversity, rather than seek an European meta-language should promote various practices of translation as the only feasable language of a democraticm anti-segregationsit Europe. The notion of Europe as a community of translation provides an opportunity for Slovenia to preserve its particularity. i.e. its natural and cultural heritage. At the same time, a critical investigation of contemporary practices of exclusion and translation provides an opportunity for the reconsideration of a set of theoretical and practical implications involved in theorizing the relation of dominance and subordiantion within the EU. The results of the present research project will thus contribute to finding new solutions to the constitution of a multicultural, multilingual and anti-segregationist European community, precisely, as a community of translation.
