Abstract
The project FROM A NATIONAL TO THE EUROPEAN SOCIAL MODEL deals with the abilities of Slovenia, while approaching the average EU level of development, to retain the existing social cohesion or to attain the Scandinavian type of the European social model (ESM). Faster economic growth, which is related to the level of development, is a necessary but not a sufficient condition; the shifts to the Mediterranean version of the ECM or the acceptance of the Anglo-Saxon version are less desirable alternatives, though Slovenia present position is on the margin between the Scandinavian and the Continental version of ESM. The existing Slovenian social model has been to a great extent influenced by the outcome of privatization. The loss of monetary policy and the weakness and restrictions imposed on fiscal policy (Stability Pact) make the creation of the Scandinavian type of the ESM uncertain; the strength of the remaining instruments on the national level is namely rather modest.. The key importance for retained social cohesion has been shifted to the functioning of the labor market, the nature and the scope of tax redistribution, the scope of social transfers and the relationship between public and private sector.
Significance for science
Research group published more articles in established foreign scientific journals (some are in the processing phase). It has not developed new methods, it however used them in the analyses.
Significance for the country
The research group deals with actual questions facing Slovenian economy and Slovenian society. The research points to the problems which are emerging (the warnings are however often overlooked by Slovenian economic policy reacting with enormous delays) and proposes solutions. Such were, for expamle, the warning of growing indebtedness and growing current account deficits which turned to structural deficit.
