Abstract
This three-year research project will continue research into the lexicon of Slovene dialects in Austrian Carinthia. In its final form, the research will be arranged into two sections, from Kd to Na, making up part of the Dictionary of Slovene Popular Speech in Carinthia. The dictionary is bilingual: the headwords are standardised forms of Slovene dialectal lexemes, while the explanatory text is in German. Completion of the dictionary is the first of five partial aims of the extensive ‘Lexical Inventorisation of Slovene Popular Speech in Carinthia’ project. The third partial aim will begin to be realised with the production of the two sections of the dictionary: the preparation of lexical maps in order to determine the course of the lexical isoglosses in this area. With the help of software developed for the Slovene Linguistic Atlas, a basic digital map will be compiled containing a network of data points and at least 5 lexical/word-formation or semantic maps.
Significance for science
The elaboration of VI and VII volume of the Thesaurus and the continuation of this series as well as lexical lingustic maps published are very important for the developement of Slavic and Slovenian philology, as they represent the systemization and publication of dialect material from Carinthian dialects of Slovenian, a specific and important part of Slovenian linguistic territory. In Austrian Carinthia the Slovenian dialects are exposed to strong influence of the majority German lanuguage, and, partly, to Standard Slovenian. Moreover, the published vocabulary and linguistic maps are very important documentary material which enables further scientific inquiery (historic-linguistic, geolinguistic, contact-linguistic, sociolinguistic and culturological studies). Detailed regional geolinguistic studies are also important for geolinguistic studies of the whole Slovenian and Slavic linguistic area.
A great amount of borrowings which passed from German to Slovenian dialects in contacts of Germanic and Slavonic language groups though centuries has been preserved only in Slovenian dialects, but not in German itself. Therefore the Slovenian dialect material represents a source for historical-linguistic, sociolinguistic as well as culturological studies of German as well. The documented material is also a base for linguistic study of language borrowing from Slovenian into German, as borrowing takes place on dialect level and from one standard language to another.
Thesaurus is one of the most important dialectological lexicographical works within Slovenian linguistic territory. Its contribution to the science is represented by the lexicographic conception itself as an example for similar dialectological and lexicographic works as well as a great contribution to the lexical corpus of the Slovenian dialect vocabulary.
Significance for the country
With the research project L6-9052 an important international scientific cooperation between the Slovenian Accademy of Sciences and Arts and Austrian Accedemy od Sciencies was institutionalized trhough the Slovenian Scientific Institute in Vienna.
The Thesaurus der slowenischen Volkssprache in Kärnten (i. e. Thesaurus of the Slovenian folk language in Carinthia) as well as languistic maps are an important factor in preserving Slovenian language and cultural heritage in Austrian Carinthia. The Slovenian dialects in Austria are namely those which are most exposed to language assimilation from the majority language (German) from all Slovenian dialect. With the uninterrupted publishing of the vocabulary the precious linguistic material will be preserved, at least in written form, and the Slovenian linguistic territory in Austrian Carinthia will be delimited.
