Abstract
The proposed multidisciplinary project is aimed at researching new methods of diagnosticing and healing of injuries and diseases supported by non-invasive measurement of human body shape in motion and rest based on laser triangulation. In this project the following topics will be dealt with:
1. Emergent physical examination in mass injuries
2. Functional diagnostics of lung and chest wall disorders
3. Non-invasive assessment of burns
4. Quantification of the effect of botulinum toxin in treatment of torticollis
5. Measurement of the wound healing velocity in venous leg ulcers
6. Diagnostics of allergic contact dermatitis
7. Study of sagital spinal curves at postmenopausal women
8. The shape analysis of osteoporotic vertebral fractures
9. Non-invasive assessment of a venus function of a lower leg
The development of customized laser triangulation systems and supporting software for analysing the measured shape of the particular part of the human body will be carried out for each of the proposed research topics. Particularly innovative solutions are expected in the field of real-time measurement of the dynamic changes of the body shape.
Significance for science
(1) The importance of the study lies in the generation of new knowledge in the field of rapid physical diagnostics in fast surgical treatment of serious injuries.
(2) Medical technology development is moving towards non-invasive acquisition of data on functioning of the human body and at the same time to improved objectivising of measurements. Laser triangulation is a method that meets these two essential elements and is as such placed in the context of current developments in medical technology.
(3) Developing a prototype for non-invasive measurement of the extent and depth of burns will provide new insight into the physiology of these complex injuries.
(4) The importance of the study will be mainly in the introduction of an objective diagnostic test for the disease, for which now only a subjective assessment is used. A pioneering part of the study will be in definition of the body part dynamics - movement. In the field of therapy it will be possible to more objectively measure the effect, resulting in pharmacoeconomic impact.
(5) Accurate 3D measurement of the venous ulcer size, time tracking and calculating the speed of ulcer healing through the measured volume and ulcer surface.
(6) The introduction of quantitative, precise, non-contact and for practical implementation simple method for further scientific research of contact allergic dermatitis and contact allergies.
(7) The introduction of a new diagnostic apparatus for laser triangulation in medicine, additional information on changes in spinal curvature, depending on the progression of the process of osteoporosis, understanding the formation of spinal deformities.
(8) Balloon cifo plastics is a new method to treat compression fractures of vertebrae. The survey will test indications and primarily contraindications for this particular operational method.
(9) Development of a prototype for non-invasive measurement of venous function of the lower limbs may give new insight into the physiology of this complex system.
Significance for the country
The project is aimed at research of new methods of diagnostics and monitoring of treatment of injuries and illnesses on the basis of non-invasive measurement of three-dimensional shape of the human body at rest and in motion. It cosists of nine different medical topics which are connected by the possibility of using the results of the research and development of laser measurement techniques for three-dimensional measurement of body shape. The developed measurement systems excel in speed, precision and ease of use. Their special advantage is the possibility of measuring the shape of bodies in motion.
The results of the proposed project will facilitate the development of new methods used for diagnosis and monitoring of treatment of injuries and illnesses on the basis of non-invasive measurement of three-dimensional shape of the human body at rest or in motion. Due to the high speed of execution and analysis of three-dimensional measurements (on average less than 10 seconds) the patients will be diagnosed more quickly (shorter queue for the diagnostic process), more often (the measurements is completely harmless for the patient), and the course of treatment will be documented and managed more accurately. The price of each measurement is negligible (only depreciation costs of equipment, value ranging in order of magnitude from 5000-10000 euros). Overall, the development of new rapid diagnostic methods based on measurement of three-dimensional body shape in certain fields of medicine improves treatment options and brings financial savings in health care.
