Abstract
The primary goal of the project proposal is to develop methods and solutions that enhance the security, dependability and privacy in pervasive systems or Ambient Intelligence ecosystems by capturing the current security expertise and making it available for automated processing. The project aims to provide solutions and a framework that enable automated integration, configuration, monitoring and adaptation of security, dependability and privacy mechanisms for such ecosystems. The envisaged solutions will be based on standardized patterns enabling easy integration in pervasive systems that will prevail the future networked service architecture. The project takes in account five key areas to provide security, dependability and privacy mechanisms: (i) Organization & Business, (ii) Workflow & Services, and (iii) Network & Devices levels, (iv) provision of integrated solutions for these mechanisms and (v) support for run-time monitoring. The envisaged work is focused on the two most important components: Organization & Business and Network and Device level.
Significance for science
Security, dependability and privacy are crucial concerns for modern information-communication systems, especially for complex heterogeneous networks such as pervasive systems, because of the size, mobility, which introduces increased vulnerability, heterogeneity, complexity and dynamicity. Results of the project provide the basis for the dynamic provision of security properties in pervasive systems. Standard specification of the patterns and schemes enable faster development of secure pervasive systems and services, automatic replacement of the components and easier monitoring. Developed mechanisms, solutions and framework are integrated and demonstrated in concrete scenario of the use of pervasive systems and services for the purpose of trusted long-term archiving.
Significance for the country
Today’s economy and society are vitally dependent on distributed ICT infrastructures and systems serving their core processes and functionalities. With the availability of ubiquitous computing abilities, ad-hoc access to network and communication infrastructures, a variety of devices supporting the mobile users’ needs with advanced functionalities, and the ever growth of the available entities (including devices, applications, systems, environments, and their communication) that can spontaneously interact to offer completely new features and serve evolving requirements, this dependability will even increase. In the future more users, institutions, »things« and critical information infrastructure will be connected to the internet and it will become a critical factor for supporting and improving the Slovenian and European economy. Basic requirements for operation of such environment are provided security, privacy and dependability. This proposal provides a significant and extensive contribution to secure and dependable AmI Ecosystems. Security experts, developers, service providers and end users will benefit from the project results. The research results are also strongly related to the national priority areas where one of them is the information-communication technologies.
