Abstract
Relief is one of the most important landscape elements but is only studied by a handful of scientific branches and few scientific and professional works are written about it. Slovenia still does not have a modern, quantitatively oriented and geographical-information-system supported classification of relief, even though the database and the software enable it and it would be useful in numerous scientific branches.
The aim of the project is to study the principal characteristics of relief with an emphasis on relief forms. On the basis of the analysis of the dominant relief forms based on the use of the geographical information system, we intend to elaborate a modern classification of relief.
Previous relief classifications were based on a subjective and mostly only qualitative approach. The new approach will hopefully lead to a leap in quality compared with the earlier classification of relief.
The results of the project will be useful for researchers and other users. Although intended for geographers in particular, they will also be useful for geologists, hydrologists, biologists, pedologists, construction workers, town planners, and landscape architects as well as for various local and national institutions involved in spatial planning from the viewpoint of science, town planning, agriculture, and the natural heritage.
Significance for science
With this project we:
- contributed to creation of new professional topic in Slovenian geography
- produce, refine and expand the methodology in the preparation of relief classification,
- found the fundamental laws that affect the classification and typology of relief
- contributed to the development and updating of the Slovenian geographical terminology,
- contributed to the perception of relief as an important or fundamental part of earth's surface sphere where natural and social geographical factors overlap, and should therefore be protected in some cases protect (sinkholes, caves,).
The results of the project relevant to geography, but also for related disciplines, such as architecture, urban planning, hydrology, agriculture, forestry and natural and cultural heritage.
The material, which was formed by the project, we will prepare a scientific monograph.
Significance for the country
The project results are useful in several areas of development of Slovenian society, in particular:
- When designing various measures of spatial planning (for settlements, road and other infrastructure) and in economic planning (availability) in terms of development opportunities and constraints due to relief.
- For raising the awareness of population on relief as one of the most important natural elements and the related definition and protection of interesting or important relief forms, which are already identified as natural heritage or they could become natural heritage, which includes ecological and landscape-ecological aspect.
- The results of the project (relief classification types which depend on geomorphic processes in a particular area) will be used as one of the bases for the efficient and safe routing of settlement and human activities in space.
- Results of the project based on geographical information system, so they can be constantly updated and disseminated. Diverse application also includes space operators and government bodies at national and local levels.
- Results of the project are also of international importance because they can contribute to better integration of the European agricultural policy to Slovenian system, for example, and in determining less favourable farming areas, or value of land, etc..
