Abstract
Project "The Positioning of Urban Elite of Slovenian Cities in the Social and Economic Movements and Processes in the Period from 13th Century to 16th Century" is a frame for research of late medieval and early modern history of elites of three (back then) biggest urban settlements on the teritory of nowadays Slovenia, Ljubljana, Koper and Ptuj. The three towns differed deeply in that period, therefore also the structure of their elites differed. Such a difference between them is a result of belonging to different political entities and due to different position of the towns in social end economic movements in the region. Position of them in those movements will be addressed by the project.
Significance for science
The project formulated innovative research subjects and approaches which had yet to be applied in Slovene historiography. The research in the framework of the project constitutes the basis for further work in the field of urban elites, as various subjects remain unresearched. A network of contacts with historians dealing with urban elites in neighbouring countries has been established, which provides ample opportunities for further cooperation in this field of research. Slovene history and broad history of the regions of the northern Adriatic and eastern Alps have been enriched with new findings, and light has been shed from a new standpoint on the subject. Attention has been pointed at social groups which failed to be adequately dealt with in the (not-too-)distant Slovene historiography, or were even neglected or slighted.
Significance for the country
The project, along with the accompanying symposium, contributes to a better placement of Slovenia into current research flows, and to an improved recognisability of Slovene historiography in broader regional framework. It deepens the comprehension of Slovene history and brings new results in the field. Along with other researches, which are being carried out in the field of older history, the project has been modifying the traditional image of Slovene history that was established in the 19th century, and is characterised by an excessive nationalization of the past. The project addresses a socially relevant subject, which is regarded by the society as a sensitive issue.
