Abstract
Biochemical and genetical markers of microvascular (diabetic retinopathy and diabetic nephropathy) and macrovascular complications (coronary artery disease) and in type 2 diabetes
Significance for science
The results help us to understand molecular and genetic mechanisms of microvascular (diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy- DR, diabetic nephropathy - DN) and macrovascular (myocardial infarction - MI and atherosclerosis of carotid arteries) complications of type 2 diabetes. In retrospective cross-sectional case-control study new candidate genes for micro- and macrovascular complications of type 2 diabetes were found. Genetic markers of micro- and macrovascular complications of type 2 diabetes help us to identify patients at high risk for those complications of type 2 diabetes (micro- and macrovascular complications). Those subjects should be treated even more vigurously, and should be checked even more often in comparison to those who are not exposed to such a high risk to develop complications. With the implementation of our findings we will be able to identify pts at high risk, and to prevent the development of complications of type 2 diabetes (primary and secondary prevention). Moreover, these findings will help us to find new drugs for treatment/prevention of complications of type 2 diabetes.
