Abstract
With the project “Multidisciplinary investigations of the pile-dwellings in the Ljubljansko barje” we would like to continue the interdisciplinary research of pile-dwelling settlements of the Ljubljansko barje. Within the project we will perform archaeological field actions in the Ljubljansko barje and our work will involve the development of wetland research methodology. We will perform the dendrochronological research and strive to synchronize dendrochronological curves of the Ljubljansko barje with absolutely dated chronologies of foreign institutions. Much attention will be given to the paleoenvironmental research and the research of paleoeconomy. Archaeological finds will be studied, interpreted, and presented in a catalogue since this project will also involve multidisciplinary publications of archaeological finds of the Ljubljansko barje and Slovenia in general. A computer database about the research of archaeological sites (pile-dwelling settlements) of the Ljubljansko barje will also be established.
Significance for science
The project »Multidisciplinary investigations of the pile-dwellings in the Ljubljansko barje« (L6-0137) is important for both, the Slovene and European prehistory, and for the development of archaeology in Slovenia: - we are heading toward absolute dating of prehistoric pile-dwellings in the Ljubljansko barje; - on the basis of the archaeological wood from the Ljubljansko barje some methods of absolute dating are being developed; - the Ljubljansko barje provides ideal conditions for the research of paleoenvironment and paleoeconomy – results can be compared to the results of similar research in the wetland sites north of the Alps; - we are developing the methodology of field research on wetland; - the knowledge about the Neolithic, Eneolithic, and the Early Bronze Age period in Slovenia is being widened.
Significance for the country
The project »Multidisciplinary investigations of the pile-dwellings in the Ljubljansko barje« (L6-0137) is important for the Slovenian national identity and pride. A decade ago Slovenian archaeology allowed for the Ljubljansko barje, from the archaeological standpoint, to sink into the oblivion. With the last decade of research we have managed to return it to its rightful position on the prehistoric map of Europe. Exceptional finds (wheel with an axle, metallurgical aids, etc.) and top level research achievements (eg. absolute dating of prehistoric pile-dwellings) contribute greatly to the recognition of Slovenia in the world. The project has an indirect importance for the Slovenian society mostly in the respect that it opens the possibility of developing historical tourism for the local communities and the state, which was in the case of the Ljubljansko barje completely neglected up until today. We are currently negotiating the even better and fuller cooperation with the local communities.
