Abstract
a. The project continues with the aims of the basic research project Multilingual Corpus of Tourist Texts, in the frame of which a collection of Slovene, English and Italian texts has been built and annotated. Linguistic corpora represent up-to-date language resources, which deal with language on the basis of its actual usage in texts rather than on the basis of the speaker's or the author's linguistic introspection or intuition. Corpora analyse much larger parts of language and are therefore more representative. The aim of the project is to gather, on the basis of the analyses carried out in the project Multilingual Corpus, tourist terminology and to arrange it in dictionary (book and electronic) format, which is more familiar to users, as well as to point – through the connection between the dictionary and the corpus – at the importance and advantages of contemporary electronic language resources, also for languages for special purposes, like the language of tourism. b. Tourism is a distinctively »composite« activity, which must be understood and analysed from the viewpoint of different disciplines: economy and marketing, psychology, anthropology, sociology, discourse analysis, communicology, sociolinguistics, philology, political sciences, geography, environmental studies, architecture, agronomy, urban and regional planning, history, law, sport, management, upbringing and education … Because of the contact among all these branches, their fast development, the influence of media, and the entering of elements from foreign languages, tourism terminology is often inconsistent, ambiguous, translated in different ways, and leads to misunderstandings in communication. The project thus responds to the felt need of the tourism and industry for a consistent codification of the terminology, which will be based on the evidentification and corpus analysis of professional expressions or terms, semantic analysis of terms and the establishment of synonymic relations between them, standardization regarding the language norm and the demands for a uniform terminology. c. Every identified term in Slovene in the terminological dictionary will include a semantic analysis of the expression, it will be labeled in terms of language stanrdard and terminology and will include information on synonymous relations to other terms. Each term will also include the translation equivalent in English. The terminological dictionary of tourism as a modern language manual will offer the holders of tourist activity possibilities for a better communication, and will therefore give them a more equal position in the international context. The dictionary will also represent a reference manual for language counselling and solving of the current terminological questions regarding the use of professional expressions in tourism, which will be based on semantic analyses of terms, carried out for dictionary, and on the publication of results in scientific and professional literature.
Significance for science
Corpus analysis, concept and editing of multilingual terminological dictionary, done on its basis, will mean an important contribution to the development of contemporary language resources for Slovene and for the development of Slovene language policy. Terminological dictionary will be made and organized on the basis of innovative corpus approach, which excercises statistical treatment of cases of actual use and thus assures larger language representation. Corpus analysis is allowing deepened analysis of individual language means, characteristic for professional language of tourism on all language levels. Dictionary, which will be edited with consideration of these kinds of analyses and meaning points of view, will represent quality contemporary language tool, which will contribute to better and more equal communication in international tourist space. With all these functions, the corpus-supported terminological dictionary will mean an important contribution to the development of tourist profession. Such dictionary has special significance in multicultural spaces, which, in the face of increasing social mobility, today represent the majority of European space. The first corpus-supported dictionary of professional language at the same time represents pioneer's work for similar language manuals, for development of bi- or multilingual lexicography, and likewise for theory and practice of translation of professional languages. Formulation of theoretical starting points and editing of dictionary on foundations of corpus lexicography will contribute to the development of Slovene lexicology and lexicography, above all concerning fields of professional terminology, which can be used with benefit also by other editors of terminological and other one- and multilingual dictionaries and by publishers from this field. Wider meaning of knowledges and experiences, gained in this project, will undoubtedly influence the development of language technologies field and translation. Such corpus-supported dictionary will undoubtedly be useful for educational intentions, likewise in the frame of linguistic and translation study programs and also in process of education in the field of tourism.
Significance for the country
Terminological dictionary on the basis of electronic multilingual language corpus as statistically important collection of different tourist texts means an important foundation for activity of direct holders of tourist activity, such as companies (hotels, restaurants, transport), cultural centers and associations, unions of cultural organistaions, as also for indirect holders of this activity, such as different business associations, tourism societies and unions, local communities , chambers of comerce, and after all also for the final user of tourist service. Format of dictionary is closer and more known than a corpus to above listed subjects; that is why they will be more prepared to use it. It is, as corpus-supported, based upon actual language use and is therefore elementarily more language reperesentative, and at the same time is encouraging closer acquainting with the format of electronic corpus and its advantages (selective and ordered search, search by colocations, search by direct context of a word). Besides help at formulation of texts in Slovene language, dictionary will undobtedly be an important source for translation and interpretation of tourist texts or for original formulaion of texts in foreign language. Bilingual terminological dictionary of tourism thus represents an important language tool for more successful communicating and consecutively more equal position in international toursit environment. The project is of large meaning also because of its language-political value. Developing and existence of contemporary language sources introduces one of the most important levers of language policy, because it strenghtens and spreads the place of Slovene language use with existance of quality language manuals. The fact, that the dictionary is bilingual and corpus-supported, expands language awareness outside of frontiers of Slovenian state and is improing language use also in foreign language; thus it allows more equal performing and integration in ineternational environment; that goes for the field of economic activity and cooperation and also for accessing the new knowings. With this, the project directly influences the successfulness of Slovenian tourist organisations abroad. This should not overlook The fact that the tourist offer represents a flagship for the country image abroad should not be overlooked; the linguistic appropriateness and effectiveness of presentation and action are therefore a great promotion by itself. Corpus-supported terminological dictionary of tourism, which includes extensive samples of texts and with this of tourism discourse, also represents an important contribution to the development of socio-cultural aspects of tourism, which have been neglected in the current research, as well as to the development of interdisciplinary approaches in dealing with natural and cultural heritage. As the tourism sector depends on its subject, ie. natural and cultural specifics of the country, which are included in tourist offer, the dictionary at the same time represents an important information base of Slovenian natural and cultural heritage.
