Abstract
This project seeks to study the history of linguistics and the view on language, and to describe the linguistic situation in Slovenia, between 1607 and 1758 from the viewpoint of historical sociolinguistics. In the analysis of the language situation of that time, modern linguistic, literary-theoretical, and literary-historical findings will be applied, in addition to findings in history, sociology, the book trade, finance, teaching and history of law, the education system, teaching, theology, ethnography, and other disciplines. In addition, direct and indirect influences of 16th-century Slovenian linguistic thought on the thought in the 17th and the first half of the 18th centuries, as well as the influences of European linguistic thought on Slovenia, will be sought. The analysis will require the study of original printed texts and extremely demanding manuscript texts. In terms of methodology, the study will be based on the methodology developed by studying the 16th century while writing the doctoral dissertation and as presented in the monograph Zgodovina misli o jeziku in književnosti na Slovenskem: protestantizem (History of the View on Language and Literature in Slovenia: Protestantism). Because of the new methodological approach, and the synthesis and syncretism of the research, a series of original results and new findings are anticipated. The findings will represent relevant fundamental texts that will serve as a basis for further research and a basis for a general history of linguistics in Slovenia, which does not yet exist. There are few sources from the period that this study covers, so such research will be fully manageable (the basic sources are introductions to individual printed and manuscript works, two printed and one manuscript grammar, and introductions to two printed and several versions of manuscript dictionaries).
Significance for science
This study uses a new methodological approach and presents findings in a synthetic and syncretic form. The study yielded original results and new findings. We discovered a new source (Alvarus) that has not been included in the overviews to date. Texts that were not easily accessible to the wider scholarly community have been made available through translations and annotations. We consolidated the methodological procedures for the description of socio-linguistic situation in a specific linguistic space. The findings present relevant basic texts that will serve as a starting point for further studies and as a basis for a general history of Slovenian linguistics, which has not yet been written.
Significance for the country
Preparing a solid basis for a still-unwritten general history of Slovenian linguistics is of fundamental significance to Slovenia’s development. This is also in line with the relevant goals, principles, and tasks laid down in the Resolution on the National Research and Development Program for 2006–2010. The results of this research are strengthening knowledge of historical linguistic and sociolinguistic characteristics of thought about language in Slovenia during the period addressed. This will contribute to greater recognition of the Slovenian state of affairs in the broader European environment. Slovenia is more or less overlooked in such overviews of European grammar writing and in encyclopedic works (e.g., the Lexicon grammaticorum). Consequently, the results of this study will also promote Slovenia as a country. At the same time, this research will enable a comparison between the situation at that time in Slovenia with the situation in other European countries.
