Abstract
The project deals with interference on the interface between Romanic and Slavic worlds; in particular it deals with examples of Slovene words that are present in the Italian dialect of Trieste. The problem of interference in the above mentioned area was dealt with by different authors, but mainly all of them were interested in Romance loan words in Slavic idioms. What we suggest, is a nearly undiscovered direction. This is a more than ever up-to-date question, particularly because today, the contacts between people have become part of Trieste's reality, especially after the entrance of Slovenia in the European Union. In addition, the vocabulary that we intend to research is disappearing due to changes of the life-style that are getting more radical and to total globalisation, and will shortly be completely extinguished. The aim of the research is to prove, through an exact phonetic, morphological, lexical and etymological analysis, that the impact of Slovene idioms on the Italian dialect of Trieste cannot by no means be ignored, which is very important, as there is a prevailing opinion that in this area the interference is manifested only in the opposite direction. The material will be gathered through field research as well as through data that will be extracted from the already existent dictionaries of the Italian dialect of Trieste, and the glossary of Slovenisms in the Italian dialect of Trieste will be compiled. The project will then take into account different categories of Slovene loan words: Slovene loan words that belong to the Common Slavic lexical fund; Slovene loan words originally deriving from Germanic languages; Slovene loan words originally deriving from Latin and Romance languages; Slovene loan words that derive from other languages (Oriental words etc). These words penetrate into the Italian dialect of Trieste dialect in different ways, that will also be described in the research, namely: through 'general' Slovene (words that are equal in standard Slovene and in the dialect); through dialectal Slovene and through standard Slovene. The research will be focused even on the use of Italian Trieste Slovenisms from the point of view of expressiveness and on the adaptation of vocabulary in the Italian dialect of Trieste on all levels of language. Semantic fields, in which Slovene words are more or less represented, and their vitality will also be defined. The material will be gathered through field investigation as well as through data that will be extracted from the already existent dictionaries of the Italian dialect of Trieste. The whole research will show how important is the analysis of Slovenisms in the Italian dialect of Trieste according to the root. The results of the project, oriented towards the evaluation and conservation of the Slovene cultural heritage in this area, will be valuable for Slavic and Romanic linguistics. The project will be organised and carried out within the framework of the Institute for Linguistic Studies of the UP SRC Koper which was actually based on dialectologic research from the very beginning.
Significance for science
The research project will be of great value for the Slavic and Romanic linguistics (dialectology and sociolinguistics). With the help of the collected dialectal material and publication of the glossary of the Slovene borrowed words in the Italian dialect of Trieste, we can trace anew the dialectal image of the area from the viewpoint of Slovene interference influences on the Italian linguistic reality.
Significance for the country
The results of the project are of substantial significance for Slovene cultural development as they appraised and emphasized the meaning of linguistic intertwining in this European culture area thus giving an example of a millenary cohabitation of two languages or dialects, which is a unique opportunity for an appraisal and preservation of Slovene cultural heritage in the area of human activity that has long been neglected.
