Abstract
The research group is dealing with the chemical synthesis of various compounds (coordination, organometallic, bioinorganic ...), structural characterization of the obtained compounds and with the study of relation between the structure and properties (biological, chemical, physical...). The research group is well equipped with the instruments for X-ray structure determination of monocrystals as well as for the preparatory work at low temperature and in inert atmosphere.
Significance for science
Coordiantion copmounds with various properties, of which many are applicable, are becoming a connectiing point between inorganic, organic (synthesis of ligands) and biochemistry (metals in biological systems) and meteril science. Coordiantion compounds, of metal halogenides, pepared in the frame of the program group are broadening the possibility of their application in all listeg fields. Biological studies involving metal-containing species are a hot topic in current research and many high-impact journals recently dedicated issues to this topic. Ruthenium complexes have repeatedly proven to be very effective in in vitro and in vivo studies as potential anticancer agents and Rh-based drugs show promise as well. However, the mechanisms of action still remain unclear and the action through multiple targets is currently proposed and the final effectivity and selectivity is the result of the synergistic effect. In order to predict (or at least soundly propose) the relationship between structure and activity more structural data must be obtained and coupled with screenings of biological activity (enzyme inhibition, DNA interactions, in vitro toxicity,…) as well as detailed biological evaluations on carefully selected and effective compounds. The central European region is the world's leading region in both bioinorganic chemistry and ruthenium chemistry which also comprises the fields of homogeneous catalysis and dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells. There are long-time collaborations between many of the most prominent teams and this project, as a co-application through the leading-agency agreement with FWF would continue and strengthen the collaboration between some of those teams as well as reinforce the European position in the field of bioinorganic medicinal chemistry. The defense of intellectual property, economic exploitation, spin-off creation and related topics will be discussed and addressed with supporting services within the University of Ljubljana (UniLj Incubator, Institute for Innovation and Development, etc.).
Significance for the country
Scientific and technological developemnt is global, so that the scientific achievements, listed in the previous point are relevant also for Slovenia. For the development of Slovenia it is especially important that the reasearch, being performed in the frame of the program group, are also implemented into the teaching process at the faculty. The research are included into the study process of teh 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle of studies and thus help in formation of young chemists and supports their further research and development activity. A part of the research is also connected with protection and rescue. In the years 2005 to 2012 there were 3596 chimney fires, the number of chimney fires was growing from 2005 to 2009 (up to 573 fires yearly). In 2010 and 2011 there were less fires (382 yearly), while in 2012 the number rose again (over 500). Such fires occur mainly in living objects. The research is directed into analysis of the importance of using right fuel (humidity, composition) and assure optimal burning conditions to achieve less abundant and less dangerous chimney deposits. The results also aim to education of population to abandon burning inappropriate fuels (polymers) in the ovens for solid fuels.
