Abstract
Research and development in the programme group of the research programme 'Heat and Mass Transfer' is oriented to the field of Process engineering and energy research. The research programme results from the previous and expected activities of the colleborating members in the programme group. The basic research work is carried out and will be continued in the future in the fields of Heat and mass transfer, especially in the segments, which are crucial for the understanding of the transfer phenomena in solids and fluids, i.e. different energy transformation processes by heating and cooling. The modelling of the processes will be supported and checked with the measurements on the laboratory-scale models and also on the real systems.
Significance for science
In the Programme group we were aware that domains of energy efficiency, ecology and the optimization of energy processes represent an important basis for the sustainable development of the World’s economy. Therefore all the work of the Programme group ran in accordance with these values. The R&D in strategic areas, such is the supply of mankind with the basic goods, and which are important for living and successful work, is very important. Among the basic values we also consider the safety and reliable supply of energy, which is directly related to the efficient utilization of energy, environmental protection, food supply, etc. Therefore the energy efficiency, together with environmentally friendly processes and devices, represent one of important pillars of the national research programme in developed countries. A special attention was given to research and consequently development of new refrigeration, cooling, heating and process technologies, which operate with natural working substances, and which can be driven also with waste heat in trigeneration systems. Especially in the field of magnetocaloric and electrocaloric refrigeration and heat pumping, the research on efficient active regeneration and advanced heat transfer and thermodynamic cycles represent an important contribution to science. Namely, these two technologies are emerging, and the knowledge in the above mentioned domains is rather weak. Bellow we summarize our contribution to science in the recent past years: - modelling and experiments of heat and mass transfer in magnetic and electric field, - developed analytical model for transient temperature field, variable temperature of environment and convective boundary condition in simple 3D geometric bodies with the help of Green functions, - developed exergoeconomic model for optimization of district heating and cooling systems, - results of research, development and implementation of thermal diodes and heat switches, - development of new methodology for calculation of temperature excess, correlation between quality of internal environment and optimal energy consumption, - development of advanced energy storage technologies with phase change materials, their optimization and automation, - results of research and development of advanced measuring system for 3D unsteady temperature field in submicron area, - results of the research and development of several parametric models of thermal response of blocks with damping function of micro-climatic conditions. All the members of our Programme group have numerous international relations and international collaboration on various projects. We are confident that described research activities have a broad importance for World’s science. Results of our previous work (implemented projects, published scientific papers, participation on international conferences, citations …), as well as the future work, represent an important contribution to the World’s knowledge treasury. This serves us also to support the welfare of the process and energy economy in Slovenia. Because of our scientific contribution and the research results we are well established and accepted by the World’s scientific community in different domains.
Significance for the country
The research focus of the Programme group has been all the time directed to achievement of the strategic goals of innovative knowledge-based economy, which transforms and utilizes energy with reduced CO2 emissions and contributed to a better competitiveness and sustainable development of Slovenia. The reliable, high quality energy supply and the efficient energy use of process systems has to be focused on sustainable development. With the R&D of new innovative energy and process technologies, and enforcement of environmental protection regulations, we can achieve reduction of gaseous, liquid and solid waste, greenhouse gas potential, ozone depleting substances, as well as the water pollution, we can keep and improve the biodiversity. Within the scope of socio-economic and cultural connections with European countries, as well as the adaptation of the Slovenian regulation with the European one, we have to act also in the field of energy supply and the efficient energy use. Programme of our research group was designed and it is closely following or leading the European scientific and technological development. Achieved results of our programme group have a special importance and coincide with the guidelines of scientific and technological development of the European Union in the field of process and energy engineering. Developed magnetic and electrocaloric refrigeration technology can represent a major global breakthrough for Slovenia’s industry. Efficient heating and cooling systems and devices have important effects, especially for economic development of Slovenia. Reasonable planning, building and maintenance of tunnels contribute significantly to the traffic safety. Sustainable development of internal environment of buildings is also economically and socially important for every developed country and significantly contributes to increase of the work effectiveness. Our research results are important and useful in all these areas. Market value of contemporary measuring equipment is due to specific metrological requirements very expensive and many times unavailable. Developed algorithms for additional improvements and identification of metrological characteristics of process measuring equipment, especially in the context of qualitative production process, have a special economic significance. The collaboration of our group with European and World’s leading research institutes within the scope of the programme contributed an important knowledge and technology transfer to the Slovenian industry. This is why research of our programme group is important for technological development of Slovenian economy. Most of the results obtained on the basis of the work in programme have been or will be applied in practice in the near to medium term. These results serve to Slovenian industry for upgrade or improvement of existing production technologies and products toward the global competitiveness. The Programme Group is constantly transferring knowledge on modern methods of the energy performance evaluation for buildings and assessment of the internal environment. Group collaborated intensively with DARS – Slovenian company for state roads, DDC – State company for roads, manufacturing industry, such are Hidria, Kolektor, Gorenje, KIV Vransko, and institutes, that deal with the mentioned fields of research. We brought modern methods to achieve higher quality of internal environment in buildings, monitoring and analysis of actions on highway and railway tunnels, etc. Special attention was given to the field of flow metrology in Slovenia (for example: setup of metrologically defined testing facilities) and education of future engineers in the field of metrology of process engineering quantities.
