Significance for science
The group work involves fundamental and applicative research in the field of optical fiber sensors and interactive interfaces. The research in the field of surface micromachining of the optical fiber tip, which is part of the research programme, enabled the creation of new generation micro optical sensors with a diameter similar or equal to that of the optical fiber dimension, therefore 125 um. Micro-optical sensors extend the possibilities and ways of measurement compared to classical sensors. They are distinguished with small dimensions, mass, electromagnetic immunity and dielectric structure. The developed sensors form the basis in the further development and research of new applications and devices for different spheres of science and technology like micro/nano technologies, micro-fluidics, biomedicine, environmental science, etc. Activities in the field of opto-electronic signal enable a cost-effective extraction of spectral characteristics with different optical fiber sensors which will accelerate the introduction of optical fiber sensors into practical applications. Thus the accomplished and ongoing work opens up possibilities for better transfer of research results in the field of optical fiber sensors into real industrial environment. The performed research in the area of interactive interfaces contributed in terms of new hardware interface realization and in form of their implementation in real environments. The fact is that more and more people are using the internet with its services i.e. distance information transfer and communication services for distant user connection. Today the technology is even more accessible to disabled persons and elderly people which population is increasing and has to be considered in the development of applications. Now, with the support of technology, disabled persons have the opportunity for equality in social and economic environments. In the field of science the results gathered with transparent video of sign language, new aspects and possibilities for further development in the filed of linguistics and computer applications accessibility are offered.
Significance for the country
Optical sensors and micro-technology represent worthy and real business opportunities for Slovenian companies. Thus we performed industrial projects in berido 2009-2012 with one foreign and several Slovenian enterprises. There the obtained research results in the field of micro-sensors and micro-sensor technologies were thus directly implemented in development of practical systems. The cooperation with local and foreign enterprises is performed in the form of research and development projects in the field of new products which are directed towards high added value and enhancement of market shares which the companies are holding on the world market. The performed research work therefore directly strengthens the position of Slovenian companies, raises the added value of products and therefore positively influences the Slovenina GDP. The development of quasi-distributed optical fiber sensors is a technology, which can essentially contribute to safety improvements in geomechanic endangered regions. The latter represents a particular problem to specific terrain configurations in Slovenia. The research results can be directly implemented in a form suitable for avalanche or land slide area monitoring. The work in the field of interactive interfaces represents the opportunity for new hardware equipment design which can simplify self sustained dwelling and safety of elderly people. It also improves connectivity of persons with contemporary digital systems. On account of inventiveness in transparent video of sign language further research and use in Slovenian environment offers new possibilities for Slovenian science recognition in the world. Because of the European Union demand for accessibility of web sites regardless of the user disability, known as Riga declaration 2006, this technology could offer the opportunity of expansion to all necessary web environments, especially to services like e-Government, e-Taxes and of course e-Learning. Since good logistics and equipment is necessary for recording, media combining and web placement, there are new economic opportunities of product extension or added value increase to existent economic institutions.
