Significance for science
Research programme group connects researchers two complementary areas - pharmacology and pharmacogenomics . The link has been and will enable faster development of both fields . and consequently faster development of new drugs, biologics , new diagnostic tools and treatments . The results of the research program will explain the effects and mechanisms of action of endogenous and exogenous substances investigated : neurotransmitters (eg, histamine ) , immunomodulators ( histamine , cytokines ) and toxins ( melittin , ethanol) on the human body in various states or physiological or pathophysiological conditions. Some of the results will show new applications of known pharmacologically active substance in clinical practice ( non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , psychotropic medication ) , the other on the possibility of developing new drugs with specific , desired effect ( nootropic ) . Interdisciplinary integration of pharmacology and pharmacogenomics represents a new value-added efficiency and research results in both fields. A significant part of the pharmacological research is focused on studying the sites of drug action in the central nervous system and drugs that affect the central nervous system ( psychotropic medication , nootropic ) , which is in line with European research priority " Brain Research .
Significance for the country
Pharmacology as a bridge between basic biomedical ( molecular biology , biochemistry and physiology ) and clinical branches of medicine . Pharmacology at the University of Ljubljana teaches at the Faculty of Medicine , Faculty of Pharmacy, Biotechnology Faculties , Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and the Faculty of Health Sciences . Optimal instruction course at the university level must be supported by appropriate alkaline survey. The study of substances with similar biological effect , places of operation and effect allows farmakologom to know how to translate the results of preclinical studies in the development of a rational and safe use of medicines. They are basic pharmacology is essential to provide advice on the registration of new drugs , and therefore the knowledge framakologije essential for anyone who sodelujajo specialized commissions of the Public Agency for Medicinal Products and Medical Devices health insurance . expert committees dealing with rational use of drugs in clinical practice . In the modern world , we can not avoid abusing drugs for recreational purposes , so the knowledge of pharmacology is also essential in identifying substance abuse with biological activities for recreational purposes ( doping in professional and recreational athletes ( ab) use of substances with nootropic effect .
