Significance for science
For some time, the international humanities academic community has been aware of the need to reflect, problematise and systematically describe discourses and practices that facilitate the construction of collective identities. In the swiftly growing corpus of scientific literature on natural and social foundations of collective memory (considered one of the pillars of collective identities), the research of the ways of shaping and re-shaping collective memory, i.e. discursive formulae and cultural practices, scientific discourses that influence shaping of national and other collectivities, is particularly important. Research work of the "Language, Memory and Politics of Representation" programme group contributes to expanding the knowledge on the shaping of memory (and consequently identity) in particular collectivities in Slovenia and the neighbouring countries.
Significance for the country
Research results of the "Language, Memory and Politics of Representation" programme group significantly influence a better understanding of historical processes that decisively influence the uses of the past and historical myths for political purposes. Additionally, the research results enable a better understanding of the significance of cultural heritage locally and nationally. In the historical moment in which Slovenia and other societies of Southeast Europe found themselves, such awareness is of particular importance. It enables individuals to practice active citizenship through reflected attitude towards and participation in social and political events on the national, regional and European levels.
