Significance for science
Dealing with the problems of Communist regime has until now been very neglected in Slovenian historical accounts, as only individual historians have involved themselves in this issue. Beside that an independent scientific research of Communist regime started rather late. The Study Center for National Reconciliation has identified as its primary objective to join in the systematic investigation of these issues, and in doing so, to contribute to the discovery of new historical data within this field. Regional studies published in the series«Totalitarisms – Questions and Challenges« – two have already been published, others are in work or are in the agenda – will help to get a better overview of the war and postwar situation on Slovenian territory, respectively in the Republic of Slovenia. Studies of different social classes will follow, in preparation is a study about the situation of farmers after the war, of different religious groups and of course papers on totalitarian structures and violations of human rights, as well as case-studies. The publishing of documents in the series »Documents and Testimonies« will also continue, as well as the work on database »Political convicts in Slovenia in the period 1945-1953. A better access to information about totalitarian structures and causes of violations of human rights and freedoms will be allowed, which is especially important for the further scientific work. Research results will be presented at conferences to which scholars from Slovenia and other European countries will be invited, whose research is also focused on violations of human rights and freedoms. The papers will be published in the already mentioned series »Totalitarianisms – Questions and Challenges«. As in the past, round tables about burning questions of Slovenian totalitarian history will be held, scientists with different standpoints will be invited. Such open-minded discussions are very important for scientific work.
Significance for the country
Research of the features of the Communist totalitarianism has opened several new questions regarding the characteristics of the totalitarian systems and its phenomena in general. This represents a basis for further analysis and opens up a wide space for debate and for confrontation of different points of view. From this perspective, the importance of the implementation of the research program is in the fact that critical examination of the characteristics of Communist totalitarianism is not limited to Slovenian area only, but has to be viewed in wider European surroundings. This is reflected in cooperation with related institutions in Europe, dealing with research of totalitarian systems and phenomena and in participations at domestic and international conferences and meetings. With new insights and conclusions we inform both the professional as well as the general public. Members of the program group participated in the organization and execution of other events, such as international exhibition titled "Totalitarianism in Europe – Fascism, Nazism and Communism”, and in in different ways handed over reports about the achievements also to general public. Study center for National reconciliation organized round tables and lectures, as well as the annual European Day of Remebrance for victims of totalitarian and authoritarian systems. New insights and facts are important for educational process, because on the one hand, they help to identify characteristics of totalitarian systems and on the other hand, to see fundamental differences between the totalitarian systems and democracy. The purpose is to help to prevent such violations of human rights in future. SCNR collects testimonies and family stories, which are an important source for the study of contemporary history. The tyranny of totalitarian Communism caused great injustices to individuals and entire social groups that the Republic of Slovenia is obligated to rectify. Numerous basic human rights violations that occured especially following the end of the Second World War and the consequences of measures executed by totalitarian regimes have still not been satisfactorily researched. Because of that the design of the research programme "The Tyranny of Totalitarian Communism in Slovenia 1941-1990" provides a basis for the correction of injustices, possibilities for harmonious civilizational and cultural development of Slovenia and the realization of national reconciliation. New realizations and facts will be important in educational and cultivational processes as they can impress upon the conscience of school children the necessity of respecting basic human rights and freedoms as well as recognizing the necessity for national reconciliation, particularly with the intent that such violations would not occur again. This, as well as informing the wider public of new findings that pertain to totalitairan tyranny, also affect the development of national cultural legacy and national identity.
