Significance for science
The results of the research project include informations on stability, degradation and toxicity and estrogenicity of selected compounds which are used as additives in a variety of lotions for sun protection, as well as industrial chemicals. Photochemical reaction as well as other reactions (reaction with disinfectants) of these compounds are important as we can on this basis assume, what are the possible products as a result of the above-mentioned reactions. Given the fact these compounds are new and the literature reports little information on the potential adverse biological effects such as their toxicity and estrogenicity for selected non target organisms are very important, because certain effects and concequences of their use may occur later. From the results we can say with certainty that the products formed by disinfectants are a group of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Knowledge on the potential hazardous properties of these compounds and degradation products is important in terms of protection of aquatic ecosystems. In the case that these substances are toxic, or that endocrine disruptors, may enter come in river waters by sewage or effluent from sewage plants and then into the groundwater, the source of drinking water and cause unpredictable effects.
Significance for the country
The importance of the project for development of Slovenia in an interdisciplinary collaboration of top experts from different fields, who transmitted their knowledge to the scientific and professional public through publications, introducing new knowledge in industrial branches and include the results directly into their teaching practice. However, due to the treatment of industrial chemicals that are used all over the world, the results are an important contribution to the implementation of new European products.
