Significance for science
Apart from Art, Mathematics is the only universal language of human communication present in all developed civilizations. It is a basis of Natural Sciences and lies at the heart of theoretical Computer Science. Abstract mathematical theories are used in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science and also in Social, Economic and Biomedical sciences. Therefore the influence of Mathematics may be expected in several important areas of human activities such as modern Economy, Safe Communications, Data protection, Decoding of Humane Genome all of which will undoubtably make a crucial mark to the 21st century.
The results obtained during this project are helpful for a better understanding of subtle connections between Algebra and Combinatorics, in particular Graph Theory. Structural results about objects, defined by the degree of their symmetry, are important in general, not only in mathematics but also in other sciences; for example in chemistry and theory of elementary particles. The multidisciplinary aspect of the proposed project gives additional value to the project, with problems, solutions and results pertaining to hot areas of research, with research results frequently published in highest ranked scientific journals.
The importance of research goals of this project can be seen from project group members’ bibliographies, the citations of obtained results, numerous established connections with foreign scientists and comprehensive bibliography of the field in general. Results obtained during the project are published in prestigious international journals and presented at international conferences. Consequently, this gives further recognition to the Slovene mathematical school in Algebra, Combinatorics and Graph Theory.
Significance for the country
With this project Slovenia kept in touch with modern trends in mathematics. The project is important for Slovenia because it established a high quality, internationally recognized School of Discrete Mathematics in the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies at the University of Primorska.
