Significance for science
Communication is the basic phenomenon enabling solitary and social life. By the definition is communication the process of information exchange between sender and receiver by signals of different modalities. Modalities are adapted to the medium through which signals are transmitted. Although vibratory communication is primordial way of information exchange were the intensive studies of this phenomenon enabled only in the last decades by increased technological development of sensitive non-contact recording techniques. Most investigations have been connected with mating behaviour and significantly less is known on the other hand on the side effect of this communication, i.e. attracting of predators. The study conducted in the frame of this project is thus one of the first that shows such a possibility in a predator-prey model on species from the same Heteroptera family (Pentatomidae). The results of the study demonstrated the broad repertoire of predatory stinkbugs vibratory (substrate-borne) signals, their various ways of production and different frequency, time and amplitude characteristics. From the scientific point of view is most important recognition that species specificity of signal structure is relative because the characteristics of vibratory signals may change during tranbsmission through a plant to that extent, that an individual recognizes them as conspecific emissions and responds to them. The latter may be a fatal mistake in the case of predator-prey relation.
Significance for the country
The results of investigation within this project are important for development of Slovenia at different levels. We estimated the presence of the predatory stinkbug species Picromerus bidens at areas with their potencial prey, i.e. the invasive stinkbug pest species Nezara viridula. Most important is identification of the latter species around Ljubljana indicating its potential to invade agriculturaly intensive regions inland Slovenia. As an important achievemnt for development of Slovenia is estimation of low relevance of the predator P. bidens as teh factor of biological control in the field due to its low abundity. Research in the frame of this project joined scientists of related institutions from Brazil and Russia to enable the echange of knowledge, know-how and technology also in the future. Not less is important that the young researcher as PhD student gained knowledge in the field and that the latter has been transferred through lectures to students at different levels. Finally the project group optimized the laser vibrometry methode for registration of low amplitude vibrations from different parts of a plant that do not allow the use of any contact methodes for registration of vibratory signals.
