Significance for science
The project strengthened scientific activities and studies connected with the Otlica atmospheric observatory. This observatory is going to be a multi-instrument and multi-purpose facility. Several scientific topics may be investigated by coupling different measurements and both the upper and lower atmospheric regions may be remotely sounded. Regarding the investigation on ionospheric perturbations, the project aimed at the setup of a monitoring station in the Alpine-Adriatic region where there has been a critical lack of measurements up to now. The data collected at the UNG Otlica observatory will soon be inserted in larger monitoring networks (such as SWEN, operated by ESA, and the one operated by the DLR), in order to improve the spatial and temporal resolution of mapping and modelling tools over this region. This would represent a key improvement in the monitoring of ionospheric perturbations at middle latitudes, as our monitoring stations provide data from the totally yet uncovered Alpine-Adriatic sector. The experimental data we are collecting will help the entire scientific and professionals’ communities in a deeper understanding of ionospheric perturbations on satellite navigation and telecommunications systems as well as Earth observation missions. Regarding the water vapour measurements, the estimates made by using the dual frequency GPS receiver were carefully calibrated by using the co-located lidar. This is a very novel technique which will improve the accuracy of GPS water vapour measurements by using calibration tools provided by the co-located lidar. This will ultimately allow for creating consistent and accurate water vapour maps by using sparse GPS receiver in the Alpine-Adriatic region, in order to provide a key contribution to meteorology and climatology.
Significance for the country
The project has relevant benefits to satellite based navigation, surveillance, surveying, and telecommunication services by providing updated information on the disruptions caused by the ionosphere and thus on the services reliability in the Alpine-Adriatic region. The activities connected with the proposed project will be useful to companies dealing with electronics, radio receivers’ development, and telecommunications. The project offered a number of possibilities for the cultural growth of the society as a whole. As mentioned above, the proposed project includes dissemination of scientific results and activities in the society (WP12). This was achieved by organizing participation in the Researchers Day 2011 in Nova Gorica as well as a TV interview stressing the importance of ionospheric research. The dissemination activities were aimed at schools and generic public with issues such as the solar cycle and its influence on human activities, the Earth’s atmosphere, the functioning of satellite based navigation and telecommunication services. The performed activities included extensive international cooperation (e.g. with EISCAT, INVG, ESA, DLR, COST, among others), which will improve Slovenia's visibility as an experienced research partner at worldwide level.
