Significance for science
Within the frame of the porject individual chemical species of of tin and chromium stable isotopes were investigated and applied in speciation analysis. The work done in the second project year represents good basis for further investigations on the use of stable isotopes in investigations on the role, transformation and fate of chemical species in the environment and living organisms. The performed investigation followed the recent trends in analytical chemistry and significantly contributed to the basic research in the field of chemical speciation.
Significance for the country
The fate and role of trace elements in the environment and living organisms depend not only on their total concentrations but also on different chemical forms in which element is present. An insufficient data exist for the pollution of environment in Slovenia with some very toxic organotin compounds (OTC), like butyl compounds, that are on the list of priority pollutants. Chromium is widely used in different industries. To assure safe disposal or reuse of chromium rich waste materials it is of crucial importance to investigate the mobility and transformation of chromium species in the environment. The work performed within the second project year represents good basis for investigation of the the impact of various inorganic pollutants on different living organisms, including humans and enable estimation of the present ecological status of the Slovenian environment. The protection of the environment that enables the quality of life also to future generations is on of the main priories not only in Slovenia, but also in Europe and other countries worldwide.
