Significance for science
Development of science in the field of modelling, simulation and control is already through several decades characterised with a gap between theoretical findings and their transfer to practice. Similarly the appearances of the new modelling, simulation and control strategies are also very rare in the last times. Due to these facts, where in our case many different connections among investigations and applications exist, the main contribution will be in combining the existing theoretical principles and approaches to achieve their practical usability (implementation technologies). International relevance of the proposed research is proved by the areas being defined as priority ones in the 7th framework of EU ( Information Society Technology, Embedded Systems, New Production Technologies ) and in European technology platforms (Manufuture, Embedded systems ) as well as in some programs of comparable European groups. The main contributions to the science development are expected in the following areas: - modelling, simulation and validation of the process of steel melt preparation in EAF, - development of the EAF simulator, - monitoring and fault detection in the EAF melting process, - optimization of the steel-melt quality in the EAF process, - optimization of energy consumption in the EAF melting process.
Significance for the country
The importance of modelling, simulation and control technology in Slovenia can be seen in many basic Slovenian documents proclaiming this field as the priority one. The mentioned technology has namely multiplicative effects, which significantly influence as actual factors as the energy, sources and pollution reductions, flexibility and quality of production, added value, humanization of working places, aspects of sustainable development etc. So the area of control technology represents one of the leading strategic orientations in the world, where similar is valid also for Slovenia, especially due to the current delays in this field. The research results should support the increase of competitiveness of engineering enterprises and industry, enable the corresponding education and contribute to the innovative environments development. In our case we believe that the monitoring and fault detection based on the process model will lead to better quality and better knowledge about the process, lower energy consumption, higher production and higher competitiveness. Succesful implementation of the results of the project would mean a great achievement in higher quality of the steel and in lower energy consumption. This would of course mean a great promotion of our research group, faculty and our country. Succesful implementation would mean an exeptional result in the world in the sence of minimizing the energy consumption, which would also lead to the exeptional promotion in the world. Based on the process model also the new operators can be educated, who will have deeper insight into the process on both parts: electrical and the part which is connected to the metalurgy. We also expect an important positive impact to the environment. Also important is the effect of promotion throught the scientific and professional publications.
