Significance for science
Results of the project have proved in favor of hypothesis that mediated interaction between membranous structures is an important mechanism in inter cell communication and thereby clinically relevant. Attention was devoted to three segments of biophysics: theoretical, experimental and clinical. In the field of theoretical biophysics the results of the project contribute to elucidation of mediated interactions in living systems that could be relevant in suppression of microvesiculation. Results also contribute to the field of theoretical physics by further development of a density functional theory of solutions and stating and solving of the variational problem considering minimization of the curvature-dependent free energy of the system subject to local and global constraints. In the field of experimental biophysics the results of the project contribute to elucidation of mechanisms of intercellular communication which represent the basis of the functioning of organisms. In the field of clinical biophysics the results of the project contribute to implementation of the understanding of the above described basic processes into diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in cancer. We published 40 scientific papers, 31 conference proceedings, 7 chapters in monographies, collaborated in 20 lectures and applied for 1 patent. In conncetion with the project, 7 doctoral theses were defended and 3 student works were awarded.
Significance for the country
Results of the project are important for Slovenija because the project considered basic mechanisms that underlay widespread diseases such as cancer, thromboembolic events and inflammation. Improved knowledge will contribute to better determination, prevention and treatment of these diseases. Colleagues who work directly with patients will use the improved knowledge which will have positive medical, social and economic impact. Elaborated methods and procedures will lead to production of the new diagnostic equipment which will increase income and employment in the industry. Within the project knowledge was transmitted to young scientsts. 7 PhD theses were defended from the contents of the project. Collaboration with scientists abroad increased the impact of Slovenia. The project is important for the identity of Slovenes because it promoted scientific work that originates in Slovenia and is leaded from Slovenia.
