Significance for science
One of the most important yet unanswered scientific questions is the origin of life. The results of this project are planned to creatively contribute to the global corpus of knowledge on this topic. Organisms are complex organized structures, and it is difficult to explain their formation from the standpoint of physics and chemistry. Several possible theories on the origin of life have been proposed, among them also a theory based on the lipid structure of membranes. Our contribution to the research in this area has been a proposed theory on vesicle selfreproduction. The results of this theory have demonstrated that the process of selfreproduction contains the elements of selectivity, which can form the basis of the increase of complexity through evolution. Further studies which could either confirm or disprove this hypothesis are necessary for further advancement of this research area, which is interesting also because on the basis of the acquired insight into the development of cell from its earliest stages, a better understanding of its functioning at the present state of development can be expected, along with a better understanding of the nature of their pathological states. The latter has implications for the advancement of medicine.
Significance for the country
The origin of life and its processes is a general and basic question, and the insight into such problems is important for the level of quality of the intellectual milieu of any nation. Active work in the area of basic research is a prerequisite for a transfer of the current state of the global knowledge to a local environment at an indepth level. In broader sense, the work on this project also contributes to the international reputation of the country in the area of science. This manifests itself through the scientific papers published, invited lectures at the scientific meetings and at the universities abroad, by either formal or informal cooperation with the researchers from other countries and by reviewing scientific papers for international journals.
